The Memories
I am a musician, composer, and bandleader and I play a variety of instruments. I believe that my instrument set up is unique as it includes a combination of congas, timbales, cymbals, a talking drum, the 21 string Kora, which is an African harp, and the Xalam, a five string African guitar.
When I compose I use the piano which helps me to conceive harmony.
I have been playing percussion since the age of three, as do all Griot children. A Griot means one’s family are musicians and storytellers in the West African region.
BAL History: Winners of the BAL Season 2, US Monastir have reached the semi-finals in every BAL season but the last one.In my community which is called Ngewal in my native language Wolof in Senegal, you will always find children drumming in the open yard. By the time you are five years old, the tradition is to make your own drum by using cans and a goat skin head , if you’re lucky enough to get one which was discarded by a professional Griot.
